Made this column for my mother's home using PVC pipe, a wood box, and a molding ring from the hardware store. I wanted to scale it down a little, but she wanted it to be large.

Maybe you've already gotten ideas like I did from the DIY shows, such as covering an unsightly wall with fabric, as I did in an old home we were renting. Or putting a couple of suitcases together with a couple of leather belts and adding feet to make an inexpensive coffee table.

For the seastyle, I topped this chest off with a rustic frame that I made with twigs for the ship picture and a shell-framed (with shells I actually collected, of course) mosaic made from a broken mirror. Come to think of it, I think I did have seven years of bad luck, so I wouldn't advise it.

COMMUNITY CONCERNS

Is our air killing us?: Everytime we turn around, the medical association has come up with another cause of cancer. It has risen to epidemic proportions, especially in children. If you look back 60 years ago and before, cancer was not as prevalent. So we have to ask ourselves - what has changed in America's lifestyle since then? There was more home-cooking being done with fresh food. People didn't eat as much packaged/processed food with all the preservatives and chemicals, and there weren't as many pesticides being used. Microwaves, that we all use regularly now, hadn't been invented yet. And could our "fresh air" be killing us? We know that living too close to power lines can cause cancer and other health issues. Now, add all those radio waves that are bouncing around. If cell phones can supposedly cause sterility in men and brain tumors, it would only make sense that all the waves in the air could, also.

Property taxes: In my opinion, property taxes should only be reassessed at the time of sale/purchase. For the elderly to be taxed out of the homes they have lived in for 20-40 years because the taxes have increased to the point that the payment exceeds what their actual mortgage payment had been is an abhorrent injustice. This country was built specifically on freedom from such oppression. Furthermore, taxes on a property being assessed not only on inflation, but also on improvements that have been made, causes a lack of incentive to even make any improvements because it will just cost the home/property owner more in the long run. This just defeats the concept of neighborhood beautification. I'm not politically active, but if any of you are and agree with this, perhaps you could lobby for a change.
